My car used to get 288-300 miles by the time it would hit a quarter tank, now it only gets to 170 miles. .

ok well let me see umm losts of things umm air filter needs cleaned or new spark plugs , new fuel filter, change oil, did you put differant size rims or tires that will affect your rpms and change your gas mileage ummm fuel lines could be clogged, fuel injectors could be bad so when your cylinder doesnt fire right your computer thinks it needs more fuel so it will push more threw to get it to fire

Yes, but how do you know the gas gauge is working the same as before. The only sure way to measure gas mileage is to fill the tank up and record the miles on your odometer. Then at your next fill up divide the number of miles driven by the number of gallons of gas it takes to fill the tank completely again. Use the calculator below and check your car’s rated gas mileage at http://www.fueleconomy.gov

How long have you been ignoring that check engine light?
