Will higher octane gas give my car more response/power?

According to wikipedia: “It might seem odd that fuels with higher octane ratings explode less easily, yet are popularly thought of as more powerful The misunderstanding is caused by confusing the ability of the fuel to resist compression detonation as opposed to the ability of the. fuel to burn (combustion). Am I reading this right? It is saying this “misunderstanding” and I just wanted to clarify… As far as I’ve heard… higher octane will not leave deposits and will give you Better gas mileage fairly, and when you put your foot to the pedal car is more responsive hyour. Any feedback please?

Racing fuel has a higher octane count… 105 or something closer to it. My understanding is that it burns cleaner and hotter – and more thouroughly. This should give a performance boost.

with a higher octane gas, the timing of the engine can be advanced slightly because of the lower combustibility rating of the gas. Advanced timing with lower grade gas will cause knocking or pre-detonation.

The temperature of a compressed gas rises in temperature. Diesels work on this principle although they have much higher compression than gas engines.

Yes, the higher octane will make your vehicle run better and will keep the valves cleaner and it the long run is better for the vehicle.

a higher octane might not leave behind deposits but it will leave behind unburned fuel…and unburned fuel means low gas millage…higher octane gas is for cars with highter compression ratio…

Only if your engine is set up for it. The higher the octane the better the fuel will burn and not combust. I have used the higher octane on a low compression engine and I have found that it didn’t make any difference that I could detect. So I went back to the lower grade of fuel. I would use the recommended octane rating that is required by the manufacturer. Anything higher would be a waste.

    good luck.

The vast majority of automobiles on the road today are designed and manufactured to perform properly on regular grade gasoline. Premium grade (higher octane) fuel WILL NOT improve your mileage, or keep your valves cleaner, or give you noticeably better throttle response.

For once, Wikipedia is correct. Unless your car is one of the very few that REQUIRE premium grade gasoline, (and your owner’s manual will tell you if yours is one of them) the only thing that premium grade gasoline will do for you is make you 20 cents per gallon poorer.

a general rule of thumb is, if it is not pinging you have the right fuel. increases in octane are to prevent pinging or more easily understood “preignition” todays cars are computer controlled and have a knock sensor to retard timming when pinging happens. the use of higher octane fuel in a vehicle that does not require it is simply a waste of your money. if it states premium fuel only it is because your vehicle was designed to operate on that fuel

Short answer- no! listen to wikipedia, the manufacturer has spent millions testing your car to recommend the best fuels and oils, they don`t want a reputation for burning engine components, listen to good advice, high octane fuels burn slower and could be still burning as they enter the exhaust system causing damage to the valves, catalyser and related components, if you alter the timing to give a longer burn time you could burn out your pistons. If you want to go faster or be more economical, visit a tuning expert for advice.

  9. Chris says:

if you have a car with high compression you should be using higher octane gas but if your car says unleaded fuel just use regular. it burns slower if you put high octane in a car designed for regular
